The story A shady plot is a humorous account of a writer trying hard to write a ghost story. The protagonist John Hallock, has been asked by a magazine publisher to write a story with supernatural elements. John accepts the tasks even though he has no expertise in writing such kind of stories. At home, when he is seated by himself struggling hard to write something, the ghost of Helen appears and decides to help him. She tells him that she was called through the Ouija board.

Helen plays a vital role in the story. She is an unattractive ghost who appears in the story in parts, first her arm, then a leg, then a sleeve, and finally, a complete woman. The other supernatural element  mentioned in the story is the Ouija board which John’s wife uses to communicate with ghosts to get answers to her questions
