The Buland Darwaza is one of the important historical monuments in Agra. Literally meaning the 'high door', Buland Darwaza is a grand gateway constructed by Emperor Akbar to commemorate his victory over the King of Khandesh (Gujarat) in 1573. It is also known as the 'Gate of Magnificence'.
Standing 175 feet tall, the Buland Darwaza is one of the most visible monuments of Fatehpur Sikri, 43 km away from Agra. An essential part of Agra Tourism Packages, this magnificent structure has been built in red sandstone with intricate decorations in white marble. Typical of all Mughal architectures, beautiful calligraphic inscriptions from the Quran can be seen on its front. The pillars and chattris at the top make the Buland Darwaza a truly impressive sight.
Another interesting feature of this great gateway is the inscription etched on it,
"The World is but a bridge, pass over but build no houses on it."
Attributed to Jesus Christ, this inscription speaks volumes of Emperor Akbar's famed religious tolerance. On the eastern archway of the Buland Darwaza, a Persian inscription records Akbar's conquest over Deccan in 1601 A.D. The Buland Darwaza is one of the tallest gateway entrances in the world. One of the grandest of Mughal monuments ever built, a visit to the Buland Darwaza is something you should not miss.
