His works have frequently been adapted into films, including The Male Animal (1942), The Battle of the Sexes (1959, based on Thurber's "The Catbird Seat"), and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (adapted twice, in 1947 and in 2013).

Abstract

The life of American humorist James Thurber is examined in terms of the themes of need for power. It is argued that Thurber's life and writings exhibit a marked ambivalence toward power. This ambivalence is expressed in four power subthemes: 1) dread of powerlessness, seen in anxiety about losing power and being subject to the power of others; 2) apprehensiveness about the possession of personal power arising from fear of its possible negative consequences; 3) ambivalent feelings about women's dominance; and 4) a desire to become the center of attention and to gain power by playing the fool and dramatizing weakness, a subtheme termed the Hephaestus Complex. It is argued that the Hephaestus Complex is a psychological phenomenon common to comedians and humorists.
