The theme of racism and slavery running throughout the poem . The "free birds" represent the white race and their domination where as the "caged birds " becomes a metaphor for African American and their confinement . The African American were denied to write the vote to organise a meeting or together together .Owing to their skin colour they were not allowed to use the same transport, public toilets or to study in the same as cool as the whites .
