Answer:

Sherlock Holmes (1887) came before James Bond (1964).

Holmes is a the world's first Consulting Detective. Bond is British Secret Service Agent.

When individuals/institutions/governments need help in uncovering mysteries or solving problems, they go to Holmes. Bond mostly does what is told by his boss M.

Holmes can be considered asexual, except for his admiration for Irene Adler he has no woman in his life. Bond is serial womanizer who says he sleeps with women for England! Holmes never married but Bond was once married.

Holmes seldom carry gun. Bond carries Walther PPK- standard issue of MI6.

Holmes can play violin well. Bond probably has no musical talent. But Bond plays women like violin.

They have some similarities too (needless to say they are fictional)

Both are good at what they do.

Both are British.

Both know some martial arts. Holmes is an expert in singlestick and sword fight.

They both have "sidekicks". Holmes has Dr. John Watson. Bond has Felix Leiter or some CIA agent or some other foreign spy, but not a regular one like in Holmes' case.

In summary Sherlock Holmes is the most original detective and everyone else who have come after him (Hercule Poirot, James Bond, House, Monk, Castle) are influenced by him. I always think Ian Fleming pitched the idea to his publisher like this: "I am going to make a post-WWII Sherlock Holmes who is a womanizer and works for the government." and they accepted it
