1. Organization size

As groups or organizations increase in size, effective communication becomes exponentially more challenging. Within large organizations, the ability to reach all individuals with a consistent message becomes an issue.

2. Distrust

Effective communication requires trust between the involved individuals. When one person or group doesn't trust the other, effective communication is nearly impossible.

3. Fear

Effective communication is compromised when one party is afraid of the consequences of truthfully communicating with the rest of the group. The person may be fearful of destroying a relationship, losing their job or being embarrassed telling somebody about something. Regardless of the reason, the fear to truthfully communicate can be devastating, especially if it is widespread in large organizations.

4. Intentional sabotage

Because poor communication often results in project failure, those who do not agree with what is being done can nefariously employ it. They can easily sabotage projects by failing to communicate or by introducing deliberately misleading, untruthful or deceptive communication. They can deploy any of the obstacles discussed here to make sure a project is late to deliver, is misguided or is never completed.

5. Management blockade

Sometimes people intentionally or unintentionally introduce communication failure by assuming that what has been communicated isn't worth passing along or sharing. Some people may feel empowered by being among the few who know, while others may make a judgment call about the limited value of sharing information. Sometimes this is done under the guise of "protecting the boss." In any case, they bring information dissemination to a halt.
