The Indian subcontinent is divided into three major physiographic divisions, the Himalaya, Indo-Gangetic Plain and Paninsular India (Figure b11 ). Indo-Gangetic plain is the extensive alluvial plain of the Ganga, Indus and Bramputra rivers and their tributaries separating Himalayan ranges from Peninsular India.
