Hi,

Your answer :

The main stages of the conquest

The English increased their influence in India from the seventeenth century through the East India Company. It was not until 1858 that the end of the Mughal Empire was proclaimed and the administration of the Indies was now controlled by the British government. In 1876, Queen Victoria of England became Empress of India. The French, after conquering Algeria in 1830 and settling in Indochina (Cochin China) in 1862-1863, turned to Tunisia. Subject of rivalry between Europeans (France, Italy), Tunisia becomes a French protectorate after the signing of the Treaty of Bardo in 1881. The country apparently retains its traditional institutions (the Bey remains sovereign) but France establishes its own administration. Moreover, Tunisia abandons its external sovereignty, that is, foreign affairs and defense. In 1882, Egypt was occupied and controlled militarily by Great Britain, who wanted to watch the Indian route since the inauguration of the Suez Canal (1869). Although still under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire, Egypt is actually run by Britain. All key positions, including that of consul, are in the hands of the British who maintain Egyptian rulers without real power.

In 1884-1885, the Berlin International Conference organized the sharing of the world between the European powers. Under the auspices of Bismarck, it launches a "race for the steeple" competition to which the European powers are engaged to conquer as many territories as possible, particularly in Africa. France and the United Kingdom will constitute the largest empires, seizing most of Asia and Africa and sharing it. Everywhere conquest was made by violence; everywhere the colonized peoples opposed a strong resistance, but were vanquished.

A colony is a territory politically dominated by another state. We distinguish the operating colonies (where the colonial power administers the territory but without a significant presence of metropolitan population) settlements (where the metropolitan population is strongly established). France dominates the Maghreb and the Sahel (the region just south of the Sahara), while Britain dominates eastern and southern Africa. South Asia is also largely colonized, with the exception of Thailand and Iran: in this part of the world, the main power is Great Britain, which has the vast Indian empire. In 1920, France and Great Britain shared the Middle East. Two major regions of the world escape colonization: China and Latin America, the latter consisting of former Spanish and Portuguese colonies became independent at the beginning of the nineteenth century. But from the beginning of the twentieth century, these countries suffer the effects of "neo-colonialism": in China in particular, Western traders are all-powerful, they are not even subject to the justice of the country.

Good bye :)
