Answer:

Generally speaking, there are three types of rocks:-

1) Igneous Rocks:- The rocks which are formed when lava cools down, are known as igneous rocks. In terms of origin, there are two types of igneous rocks:

  • Plutonic Rocks:- These are igneous rocks, which are formed at some depths in the earth’s crust. For ex- granite, diorite and gabbro.
  • Volcanic Rocks:- These are molten rocks which are poured out of volcanoes as lava. They solidify rapidly on the earth’s surface. For ex- basalt.

2) Sedimentary Rocks:- Sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments which accumulated over long periods, usually under water. These rocks may be classified into three major categories with their origin and composition:

  • Mechanically Formed:- These rocks have been formed from the accumulation of materials derived from other rocks which have been cemented together. For ex- sandstone, quartz
  • Organically Formed:- These rocks are formed from the remains of living organisms such as coral or shellfish, whose fleshy parts have been decomposed. For ex- limestone, chalk, coal
  • Chemically Formed:- Such rocks are precipitated chemically from solutions of one kind or another. For ex- gypsum, potash, nitrates

3) Metamorphic Rocks:- When igneous or sedimentary rocks change inside the earth due to immense heat and pressure, they tend to form Metamorphic Rocks. The main examples are:

  • Clay changes to slate
  • Limestone changes to marble
  • Sandstone changes to quartzite
  • Granite changes to gneiss
  • Shale changes to schist
  • Coal changes to graphite

Note:- Coal may also change to diamond but only when the amount of heat and pressure provided is at a very high rate.

Hope it helps
