tributary means small rivers joining big rivers... Ex Ganga river= It's tributaries are yamuna, gandak,ghagra,koshi and sone...

Explanation:

The Ghaghara, the Gandak and the Kosi rise in the Nepal Himalaya. The tributaries which come from the peninsular uplands include the Chambal, the Betwa and the Son. These rivers do not carry much water in them. The Ganga flows eastwards till Farakka in West Bengal.
