The two basic principles of prevention of infectious diseases are:

  1. Following good self-hygiene habits and balanced nutrition.
  2. Providing immunization against common infectious diseases as per regional government medical protocol.

Prevention of infectious diseases

  • Infectious diseases include those which are caused by pathogenic microbes like bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites.
  • These pathogens mostly enter and invade the respiratory, digestive, or integumentary systems.
  • Some pathogens enter the body through vectors like mosquitoes or from other infectious human or animal sources.
  • Some of the common infectious diseases include flu, typhoid, malaria, SARS, syphilis, dengue, and many more.
  • Hence, maintaining proper self-hygiene habits is necessary to prevent exposure to such pathogens. These habits include,
  1. washing hands frequently
  2. avoiding unhygienic contaminated food and water
  3. maintaining social distancing
  4. wearing masks where necessary, especially during seasonal respiratory infections and coronavirus infections
  5. maintaining proper and preventive sexual habits will prevent sexually transmissible infections
  6. avoiding contacts with sick persons
  7. maintaining personal cleanliness
  • Adequate balanced nutrition rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals will enhance the body's natural immunity which will also help prevent infectious diseases.
  • The next best way to prevent infections is to immunize or vaccinate with appropriate vaccines to prevent regionally prevalent infectious diseases as per medical protocol.
