After fraught relations during the cold war — when India formed close ties to Moscow — Washington and New Delhi have been moving steadily closer, deepening their strategic and defence co-operation. Progress looked set to continue under Donald Trump, the US president, who had called himself a “big, big fan” of India.
But of late, frictions have mounted between the Trump administration and Narendra Modi’s government over a wide range of issues — from India’s deep-rooted protectionism and unpredictable regulatory policies to New Delhi’s desire to purchase the S-400 air defence system from its former close ally Moscow.
