Stress is a term most people are all too familiar with. It is a state of strain resulting from demanding circumstances that refuse to relent in one’s daily life.

Explanation:

  • Social stress is tension that results from one's interaction with others and from the "social environment" in general. Based on the "appraisal theory"  of emotion, stress occurs when a individual assesses a situation as personally important and perceives that they do not have the ability to cope with or cope with a particular circumstance.
  • There are three major types of social stressors Life events are characterized as unexpected, extreme changes in life that cause the victim to respond immediately (e.g. domestic violence, sudden injury). Chronic stresses are characterized as recurring occurrences causing individuals to make changes over a prolonged period of time ( e.g. divorce, unemployment). Daily problems are described as small occurrences that involve adaptation during the day (e.g., bad traffic, disagreements). Once stress is chronic, one experiences cognitive , behavioural, and physiological changes which can place one at higher risk of having a mental condition & physical illness.
  • For certain cases , social stress can lead to an increase in adverse effects and anxiety. This may also give rise to different negative feelings. For example, "rejection" or social-evaluative success stressors may lead to heightened self-conscious feelings, such as guilt and humiliation.
