The two forces responsible for uptake of water by plants are
1)Root pressure - positive pressure is called Root pressure ,and is responsible for pushing up water to small height in stem. Effect of root pressure is also observable at night and early morning when evaporation is low.
2) Transpiration pull - most plants meet their water need by tanspiratory pull .The flow of water upward through the xylem in plants can achieve fairly high rates , i.e., upto 15 metres per hour.
