The following are few major functions that the roots plays :

i) The roots of plants helps the plants and trees to get anchored in the soil.

ii) The roots plays the function of absorbing both water and minerals from the ground or soil.

iii) It acts as the passage for the transportation of absorbed minerals and water to the stem.

iv) Many roots also gets modified so that they can function as the organ of storage. Example of such roots is - tap root.

The plant is divided in to shoot and root system. The root of the plant are essential for plant growth and stability. The main function of roots are as follow:

  • To provide the water and nutrient to the shoot system of the plant via phloem and xylem and hence maintain the growth of the plant
  • To Anchor the plant tightly and hence provide the stability to the shoot system
  • To make the rainwater reach the ground via capillarity reaction from the soil ground to the deep inside the ground and hence maintain the groundwater.
