Medium that allow light to pass through can either be: 

1) Transparent medium
2)Translucent medium

Transparent medium allows for the transportation of light through it and also  the formation of images. On the other hand, a translucent material only allows for the transportation of light and not the formation of images as the light is greatly dispersed in this medium.

The two mediums are air and water. 
As air is transparent the light easily passes through the air without distortion
and water is also transparent but some distortion can occur in water but light passes through it too
