" The Crust "

The uppermost layer of the earth is known as the crust. The crust is very thin, with an average thickness of about 35 km.

However crust is not uniformly thick at all places. It is thinner under the oceans and thicker under the continents.

The upper part of the continental crust is actually made up of silica and aluminium.

The lower part of the continental crust and the whole of the oceanic crust is composed of denser materials rich in silica and magnesium.
