The two properties of carbon leading to formation of such a huge number of its compound around us is
1) Catenation : It is also known as self linking tendency. Carbon atoms have an unique tendency of forming bond with its own atoms. As a result we can se many of its allotrophs around us such as graphite , diamond and buckminsterfullerence.
2)Tetravalency : Since we know every element tries to full fill its octet. Same is with carbon atom too. It have 4 electrons in its outermost shell In order to complete its octet it can either receive or form covalent bonds with other elements.
