In " A shot in the dark", by Philip Sletherby, is the story of another misunderstanding. Philip Sletherby was very excited as he had been suggested for the reelections in Chalkshire. To qualify for nomination, he had to impress Mrs. Saltpen Jago. While a train to her residence Brill Manor, he met her son Bertie Saltpen. Although it was a great opportunity to impress the son along with his mother. But Philip made a mistake. He was willing to help Bertie with money but he began to suspect that the young man was lying to him. To make sure that Bertie was the son of Honoria Saltpen Jago, so he lied to him that he had not met her at all.

Answer:

The following reasons are:-

Explanation:

Philip didn't help Bertie because, firstly; he thought it was peculiar to have two crests from the same family. Secondly; Bertie hadn't met his mother in six months, he last remembered his mother as a brunette, but five weeks ago she changed her hair to look blonde. Since Philip wasn't aware of her change of appearance as he had recently met her, he believed that Bertie was lying to him. So, he didn't help him.
