It can be divided into two main parts:
- Tectum - located posterior to the cerebral aqueduct.
- Paired cerebral peduncles - located anteriorly and laterally. Internally, the cerebral peduncles are further separated by the substania nigra into the crus cerebri (anterior) and the tegmentum (posterior).
