The two types of states in India before the independence were Princely States and Provinces which were in the proportion of 40% and 60% respectively. The main purpose of the division was to annex the whole of Indian sub-continent and make it into British territory. The provinces were completely under British control while Princely States had an Indian king subjected to the British empire. The ruler was given a title like Nawab, Rana, Maharaja, Raja, Badshah which meant 'king'. We can say that Lucknow was a Princely State while Bombay was a province
