One way to define the types are governmental vs. non-governmental. The former includes services & benefits provided at the federal, state, county & city level. The latter includes religious or other non-profit organisations. And there are some private organisations that receive some gov’t benefits for providing services (food banks, for instance, receiving gov’t surplus food).

A second way is to divide them between cash and non-cash assistance. The former includes Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, diversion cash assistance, additional requirements for emergent needs. Some might include social security. The latter includes supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP aka food stamps), medicare, medicaid, subsidised child care, rental assistance (section 8 housing), etc.
