Ecological Succession :

The gradual and predictable changes in the species composition of given area is called as ecological succession.

There are two types of ecological succession :

  1. Primary succession :

This succession takes place where life never existed.

Example : bare rock, cooled molten lava, etc

2. Secondary succession :

This succession takes place where life once existed but due to some reason it has lost.

Example : abandoned crop fields, etc.

Primary succession is slow process while secondary succession is comparatively fast process.
