In India, much of its forest and wildlife resources are either owned or managed by the government through the forest department or other government departments.
Traditionally the involvement of local communities in natural resource management was neglected, now their role is also taken seriously.
The forest are classified under the following categories:-
Forests owned by government in which all activities are prohibited, unless specifically allowed. They are regarded as the most valuable forests. They constitute about 55% of the area of forest in India.
Forests owned by the government in which all activities are allowed, unless specifically restricted. These forests are protected from any further depletion. They constitute about 29% of the area of forest in India.
These forests and wastelands are mostly managed by private communities and individuals. Some are owned by the government also. They constitute about 16% of the area of forest in India.
Reserved forest and protected forests are collectively called permanent forest estates and used for timber and other forest products and protection of wildlife. Madhya Pradesh has maximum forest cover. It has 75% of its total forest cover as permanent forest. Other major states which have large percentage of reserved forests to its total forest cover are Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra etc.
Haryana, Odhisha, Punjab,Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan etc have extensive protected forests while all Northern-Eastern states and parts of Gujrat have mostly unclassed forests managed by local communities.
TYPES AND DISTRIBUTION OF FOREST AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES

1) Reserved Forests :- More than half of the total forest land has been declared reserved forests. Reserved forests are regarded as the most valuable as far as the conservation of forest and wildlife resources are concerned.
2) Protected Forests :- Almost one-third of the total forest area is protected forests as declared by the forest department. This forest land are protected from any for the depletion.
3) Unclassed Forests :- These are other forest and wastelands belonging to both Government and private individuals and communities.
