Based on the frequency of eruption, volcanoes can be classified as:
1. Active: Volcanoes which are erupting right now or will erupt in near future. Example: every year about 50-70 volcanoes erupt.
2. Dormant: Volcanoes that haven't erupted in a while but can do so in future. Example: volcano Mauna Kea which erupted about 3500 years ago.
3. Extinct: Volcanoes are classified as extinct which no one expects to ever erupt. Example Kohala volcano in Hawai Big Island.
