A unit of inheritance in living organisms is called a gene and all genes are found on chromosomes.  

Genes are sequences of DNA which code for specific proteins through transcription and translation. Each of these genes can be found in different regions of a chromosome.  

They are important and necessary in the process of reproduction, as the offspring inherits characteristics in the form of genes from its parents. Thus, genes are also responsible for transferring traits from “generation to generation”.
