Electromagnets are very widely used in electric and electromechanical devices, including:

  • Motors and generators.
  • Transformers.
  • Relays.
  • Electric bells and buzzers.
  • Loudspeakers and headphones.
  • Actuators such as valves.
  • Magnetic recording and data storage equipment: tape recorders, VCRs, hard disks.
  • MRI machines.

Answer:

Uses of electromagnet

1. Magnetic cranes: Very powerful electromagnets are used in steel to lift heavy loads. When current flows through the coil of wire, the iron becomes magnetised. It then attracts steel which can be moved from one place to another. When current is switched off, the electromagnet releases the load.

2. Electric Relays: A relay is an electromagnetic switch. It uses the current in one circuit to switch on the current in another circuit. This relay switch is used in microwave ovens as it does not work when the door is open.

3. Electric Bell: Electric bells work on the principle of electromagnetism. The electromagnet is switched on and off many times in a minute.
