Bacteria perform a number of beneficial activities in nature, viz , decomposition of organic wastes , recycling of minerals and biological nitrogen fixɑtion. They are also harmful as they cause many diseases in both humans and animals Bacteria therefore rightly called " freinds and foes of mankind " .

Useful Activities :

Agriculture :

  • Nitrogen fixɑtion ... performed by Rhizobium leguminozarum (symbiotic)
  • Ammonification .... eg : Bacillus ramosus , B vulgaris etc ....
  • Nitrification ... eg : nitrobacter
  • Bio insecticide ... bacillus thuringinesis is used as an agent against insect pests .

Industry :

  • Curd preparation ... performed by streptococcus lactis , lactobacillus
  • Curing : fermenting the leaves of tea and tobacco eg : bacillus megatherium
  • Retting : eg :- clostridium speceis
  • Production of Antibiotics

Bionoming :

Some bacteria are used in extracting valuable matal like Uranium from rocks .

Biosensensors :

DNA components from bacteria are used to detect biologically active toxic pollutants.

Bacteria are also used in medical diagnostic , food and fermentation and operations.
