In an electromagnet, the magnetic field in the magnet is caused by electric currents. When the electric source is cut off, the magnet too stops working.
The primary advantage of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet is that the magnetic field can be controlled and changed by the amount of electricity which is supplied to it.
Because of this, electromagnets find its uses in transformers, generators, loudspeakers and headphones, particle accelerator and in MRI machines
