Organic compounds are compounds that contain carbon (and most often nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen). Organic compounds are compounds found within living (biological) things. All biomolecules (protein, fat, and carbohydrates) are organic compounds. Proteins are used as building blocks for tissues and muscles within the body. Proteins also create enzymes. Fats (lipids) are also used to build tissues and to manufacture hormones. Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are used as a source of energy by the body.

Inorganic compounds are not organic ("in" = not). They are usually formed by geological systems. Inorganic compounds are used within industry. For example, they can be used as "catalysts, pigments, coatings, surfactants, medicines, fuels, and more." The hyperlink provides a wonderful explanations of some examples of how inorganic substances can be used in industry.
