The various categories of software are as follows:-

i) Operating System:- An Operating System is a set of programs which organizes and controls the computer system. MS DOS, Unix, Windows, etc. are some of the popular operating systems.

ii) Application Software:- Application Software is that programs which is built to fulfil the needs of the computer user. Word Processing Software, Database Management Software, Spreadsheet Software and Accounting Software are called Application Software or Applications.

iii) Utility Programs:- When we use a personal computer, we organize the data into sets with a specific name which is called a file. These files are again organized into groups called folders or directories. The operating system has special programs called utilities which are used to help the files, folders, programs, disk space and other such things. PC-Tools and antivirus software fall in this category.

iv) Word Processing Software:- Word Processing Software is made to prepare documents, such as essays, letters, applications, memos, books, magazines, newspapers, etc. The Word Processing Software (Word Processor) includes many useful functions that make it easier to type, re-type, delete, alter, move, replace and set the text in an organized manner in the document. It provides you different type faces (fonts) of different languages, so you can type in English as well as in other languages by using the same keyboard. MS Word, PageMaker, CorelDRAW are some of the popular word processors.

v) Database Software:- Database is a way of keeping information recorded in electronic form. It makes easier and faster to find any data from the database. We can also find written documents. For example, if you want to find the telephone number of your friend, you can search for it in a telephone directory. For this, you will look for his father's name in a large list of names and addresses which have been organized in alphabetical order for your ease. If you make a call to the telephone exchange, the operator will tell you the number within seconds by finding it on the computer. Thus, computers help us in database management. Microsoft Access is a very popular Database Management Software.

vi) Multimedia Software:- Multimedia Software is used to process images to make graphics, add animation, record and edit sounds or videos. Different multimedia software offer different facilities. PowerPoint is one of the most common multimedia software. You can put your text or graphics on a slide and animate it. Thus, moving slides can be shown, which may contain images, photographs, movie clippings, sounds, voice and animation effects. Other popular and commercial multimedia software are Animator Studio, 3DStudio Max, DreamWeaver, Flash, Director, etc.

vii) Spreadsheet Software:- Spreadsheet Software is used to keep the data in tabulated form and to calculate or compute with it at a very high speed. It provides a worksheet on which rows and columns are made. The intersection of rows and columns constitute a cell in which a data item can be put. There can be different forms of data, such as currency, date, number, text, etc. It can be selected by options provided by spreadsheet software. The spreadsheet software provides ready-made formulas for calculations. In spreadsheet software, there is an autocalculate feature. When you change any data, the result depending on it automatically changes. For example, if you have made a mark sheet, it will automatically get corrected according to the new marks.

viii) Language Processors:- These software provide a translator program that can convert high level language into machine codes. If you want to write a program in any high level language, like English, you will need its language processor. For example, if you want to write a program in C++, you will require its language processor, but if you want to write in Visual Basic then its language processor will not be required.
