there are several various methods used for refining of metals :

1) distillation - it is a process of vaporizing something and then allowed it to condensed black in seperate location . mercury and zinc were readily vaporize while other metals and impurities won't .

2) liquation - it is similar to distillation except the impure metals is only melted instead of vaporized . when the other impurities have a much higher melted point , they will remain solid and can be removed from pure liquid metals .

3) poling - it is a method used to purify metals that have oxidised impurities . it is typically used to purify metals like copper or tin that are in the impure form of copper oxide and tin oxide .

4) electrolysis - it uses current to give the energy needed to help a chemical reaction occur to break apart chemical bond between metals and impurities . this metals was first used in the late 18th century to seperate tin and zinc from their salts . this is also ued in purifying aluminium .

5 ) zone refining - it works by crystallizing of metals . since impurities don't crystallize they will fall out of matrix . this is also used for semiconductor metals such as silicon and germanium . using this method the impure method is formed into rod .
