There are four types of Number in our number system

●───────────●───────────

Natural Numbers

Whole Numbers

Integers

Fraction

●───────────●───────────●

Natural Number

The numbers 1,2,3,.....are called counting numbers or natural numbers .The set of natural numbers is denoted by N.

Thus, N=1,2,3,4,5,..........

Whole Numbers

Natural number together with 0 (zero) are called whole numbers .The set of whole numbers is denoted by W.

Thus, W=0,1,2,3,4,..........

Integers

The negatives of natural number together with whole number is called integer the set of integer is donated by Z or l

Thus, Z=.....,-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4,...........

Fractions

The number of the form of a/b where a and b are whole numbers and b≠0 are called fraction.

For Example, ½,⅔,3/4,5/7 and 7/11

Good to know.

A number that can be expressed in a form of p/q wherw p and q are integer and q≠0 is called Arsenal number.

for example ,-7/9 and 11/19 are all rational number.

Need for Rational Numbers

When we add multiply or divide to fraction we always get a fraction but this is not true in the case of subtraction.

For example ,7/5-11/10=14-11/10=3/10 Which is a fraction.

But,5/7-13/14=10-13/14=-3/10 Which is not a fraction.

Since the difference of two fraction is not always a fraction we need to extend our number system 20 fraction and their difference with a negative sign such a system is called the rational number system.

Important facts of Rational numbers.

Every natural number is a rational number for example 5 is irrational number as it can be expressed as 5/1.

Zero is a rational number it can be expressed as 0/1.

Every integer is a rational number for -7 is a rational number as it can be expressed as -7/1.

Every fraction is a rational number for example ⅔/ is a rational number.

Every decimal number is a rational number for example 0.9 is a rational number as it can be expressed as 9/10.
