Soil is the substrate for all land-based vegetation. It provides the structure to hold plant life, physically, and maintains the pathways for access to water. It also contributes many of the chemicals needed for life. It provides the environment for the germination of seeds and moderates temperature for the growing plants.

However, soil is not just for the plants. Animals require soil for their homes, often constructing nests and networks in the soil. Insects and bacteria require soil for access to water and nutrients also.

Humans use soil for construction as well. Earth dams (most dams for the control of waterways), and even some houses are constructed from soil.

We require soil to bury our dead and we rely on the soil ecology to decompose the dead and generate new life.
