Koyas cultivate ragi, bajra, jowar and other millets around the periphery of forests or on clearings in the forest. Their main food items include tubers, roots and edible greens which are found in forests. They are also artisans, who make furniture and other items out of bamboo from the forest.
Koyas are scheduled tribes who are normally found in southern parts of India, including the Lakshadweep group of islands in the Arabian Sea. They are known by several names such as Koyollu, Koi, Koya Doralu etc. They speak a language of the Dravidian language family known as Koya Basha or Koya language.
