Sedimentation. Solids and non-polar liquids may be removed from wastewater by gravity when density differences are sufficient to overcome dispersion by turbulence. Gravity separation of solids is the primary treatment of sewage, where the unit process is called "primary settling tanks" or "primary sedimentation tanks".

Various ways of Wastewater dispersal:

There are three ways of waste water dispersal -discharge to the surface water, subsurface discharge and reuse of the land.

Discharge to the surface water- Untreated disposal of the waste water is prohibited to mix with the surface water. There are limitations to discharge the waste water so the disposal of the water can not harm the quality of the water and the human health.

Subsurface discharge-Subsurface discharge can be occurred when the waste water is undergoing treatment from discharge of the septic tank.

Reuse of the land- Sometimes waste water is used in an irrigation of the land. After the treatment some of the pollutants are left in the waste water which was absorbed by the crop.
