Glucose is oxidized in three ways in organisms:

Presence of oxygen- glucose (six carbon molecule) converted pyruvate(a three carbon molecule) is completely broken down into carbon dioxide and water  with 36 ATP molecules of energy. It takes place in mitochondria of our cells.

Lack of oxygen- This type of respiration takes place when there is very little oxygen available. Pyruvate is converted into lactic acid (three carbon molecule) and energy. It takes place in our muscle cells.

Absence of oxygen- This type of respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen as in there is not a molecule of oxygen available. Pyruvate is converted into ethanol (2 carbon molecule), carbon dioxide and energy.It is called fermentation and it takes place in yeast cells.
