It has been a tragedy for many years that our Nitrogen has been broken and needs to be fixed (just kidding).

To fix nitrogen means to take N2 from the atmosphere, which is strongly bonded into an almost inert form, and fix into other molecular forms that can be utilized by plants or other living organisms to greatly enhance growth and protein synthesis.

Nitrogen-fixing has been done for eons by nitrogen fixing bacteria that are common on certain legumes, root nodules, some algaes, and diazotrophic bacteria.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, chemists developed ways of combining atmospheric N2 with hydrogen to produce NH3 Ammonia and other Nitrates which could be used to make fertilizers and explosives. Most fixed nitrogen available today is artificial.
