let the numbers be x and y

x+y=58

x-y=18. ...(i)

now,

x=58-y. ...(ii)

now putting i and ii together

(58-y)-y=18

> 58-2y=18

> 58-18=2y

> 48=2y

> y=48/2

> y=24. ...(iii)

now, putting (iii) into (ii)

x=58-24

> x=34

therefore, x=34

y=24.

Let x and y be the numbers

According to Question :-

sum of numbers is 58

→ x + y = 58 ......... ( 1 )

Difference of numbers is 18

→ x - y = 18 ......... ( 2 )

On solving ( 1 ) and ( 2 )

x + y = 58

x - y = 18

→ 2x = 76

→ x = 76/2

x = 38

Substitute value of x in ( 1 )

→ x + y = 58

→ 38 + y = 58

→ y = 58 - 38

y = 20

38 and 20 are the numbers
