The Third Estate had to pay taxes levied by the state and the church. During the 1800s, due to increase in population, the production could not keep pace and thus the prices of grains increased with the tax. Poor people and peasant were no longer able to buy bread. The rising taxes and prices with the bad harvest brought food riots and the Third Estate came under a subsistence crisis.
