The three main type of blood vessels are :-

1. Arteries

2. Veins

3. Capillaries

Arteries :-

  • Arteries are the thick walled blood vessels.

  • They originate from the heart and carry blood to various parts of the body.

  • The arteries further divide into arterioles.

Veins :-

  • These are thin walled, less rigid and valvular blood vessels, which carry blood from the body parts to the heart.

Ex :- Venacavae and pulmonary veins.

  • Generally veins contain deoxygenated blood except pulmonary veins which carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.

  • Veins are formed by the union of tiny branches called venules.

Capillaries :-

  • Blood capillaries are small vessels made up of single layer of cells.

  • These are the fine vessels that connect arterioles and venules and establish continuity in circulation.
