The three main type of blood vessels are :-
1. Arteries
2. Veins
3. Capillaries
Arteries :-
- Arteries are the thick walled blood vessels.
- They originate from the heart and carry blood to various parts of the body.
- The arteries further divide into arterioles.
Veins :-
- These are thin walled, less rigid and valvular blood vessels, which carry blood from the body parts to the heart.
Ex :- Venacavae and pulmonary veins.
- Generally veins contain deoxygenated blood except pulmonary veins which carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
- Veins are formed by the union of tiny branches called venules.
Capillaries :-
- Blood capillaries are small vessels made up of single layer of cells.
- These are the fine vessels that connect arterioles and venules and establish continuity in circulation.
