Fossil is generally a term used to define something that is dug up. The palaeontologists use fossil to study about ancient life which would act as an evidence to describe the past.  

A fossil is more likely to get damaged by three factors. They are  

    Melting - Changing its appearance by converting its original physical form.

      Colliding or pressurizing fossils: Physical way of destroying fossils.

      Changing its natural conditions: Wear out the natural agents which makes it difficult to preserve.
