The alternative and rhythmic rise and fall of the water on surface of ocean which in fact is caused because of the gravitational attraction of the Sun and the Moon is termed as tide. It is observed that tides occur only twice in approximately 24 hours.

Tides are classified into two categories :
1. Spring Tide
When the Sun, the Earth and lastly the Moon are all present in a straight line then the tides which occur are termed spring tides.

2. Neap Tide
When the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are not present in a straight line as in the case of spring tides then the tides that occur are termed neap tides.
