Tax on imports is called as trade barrier. Indian govt had put barriers to foreign trade because it was considered necessary to protect the producers within the country from foreign competition. Govt thought that trade barriers is only needed to increase or decrease trade and little did they know that it would improve the performance of producers with the improvement in technology.
