Trade winds is the name given to winds which were used by ships in the early 19th century to navigate due to the lack of mechanical power.

South east trade winds are caused in the southern hemisphere during the months following May. During these months the northern hemisphere goes through summer creating a low pressure area from the equator and up. Wind or air always moves from high lreasure area to low preasure area. As earths rotation also affects the winds, they blow from the south east direction in the southern hemisphere. These winds when crossing the equator change direction and start blowing south westerly. Hence causing monsoon on the western coast of India and are aptly named as South west monsoon winds.

North easterly monsoon is the exact opposite and blows from the northern hemisphere to southern hemisphere.
