Tranquilizers or psychotherapeutic drugs are a class of chemical compounds used for the treatment of stress, mild and severe mental diseases.

These are essential component of sleeping pills and according to the action of drugs they arr further classified as;

Narcotics : It reduces anxiety and tension.

  • e.g., heroine and pethidine

Sedatives : It reduces the action of central nervous system.

  • e.g., valium and barbiturates

Antidepressants : It reduces depression.

  • e.g., iproniazid and phenelzine

Chlordiazepoxide and meprobamate : They are relatively mild tranquilizers suitable for relieving tension. Equanil is used in controlling depression and hypertension.

Hypnotics : It is called sleep producing drugs. Barbiturates such as seconal, luminal, veronal.

Non-hypnotic drugs : Valium and serotonin
