Explanation:
Tropical forest:
- Tropical forests are found near the equator extending up to the tropic of Cancer and tropic of Capricorn.
- Tropical forests are of three types -
- Tropical rainforests
- Tropical deciduous forests and
- Tropical thorn forests.
- These forests have a temperature range of about 15-30°C.
- Each type is distinguished by its dominating flora and fauna, and the climate.
Tropical Rainforests:
- Tropical rainforests are found in a narrow strip along the equator, typically between 10 north and south of the equator.
- These are evergreen forests with a warm and humid climate throughout the year.
- They receive an average annual rainfall of more than 200 cm, which might exceed 1000 cm sometimes.
- Of all the rainforests of the world, the Amazon rainforest is the largest.
- Tropical rainforest are home to an enormous number of plant and animal species.
- Many species in these forests are yet to be discovered.
- Tropical rainforests have tall trees that grow to a height of 40 m or more.
- Various vines, creepers and epiphytes are found growing on the tree trunks.
- Such forests have a dense canopy that allows very little light to reach the forest floor.
- As a result, the forest floor is almost bare of plants.
- The understorey has seedlings of trees that gradually grow up to the canopy.
- Some tall trees may penetrate through the canopy to form a very thin layer above it.
- This layer is called the emergent layer.
- Cinchona which yields quinine, Swietenia which yields mahogany, ebony, rubber durian, strangler figs, pitcher plants, and a variety of orchids are some of the plants that are found in these forests.
- Difterent species of insects like butterflies and beetles, arachnids like spiders and ticks, worms, large snakes like pythons, anacondas and boa constrictors, a variety of tree frogs, colourful birds, and mammals like monkeys, sloths and jaguars live in these forests.
