A simple definition would be that twins are two offspring produced by the same pregnancy.
The two main types of twins are identical or monozygotic and fraternal or dizygotic.
Identical twins result from the fertilisation of a single egg that splits in two.Identical twins share all the their genes and are always of the same sex.
Meanwhile Fraternal twins result from the fertilisation of two separate eggs during the same pregnancy. Fraternal twins may be of the same or different sex.
Other types of twins:-
Conjoined twins are basically two babies born physically connected to each other.
Conjoined twins develop when an early embryo partially separates to form two individuals. Sadly most conjoined twins are stillborn or die shortly after birth.
A Parasitic twin is an identical twin that has stopped developing during gestation but is physically attached to the fully developing twin, the fully developed twin is then known as the dominant twin. The parasitic twin never completes development.
