Buddhism, on the other hand, advocates leaving one’s home and devoting all efforts toward practising in solitude. That approach didn’t bode well with the mainstream Chinese mentality. In order to ensure successful transition to the Buddhist way of life, some revisions to the original Buddha’s teaching had to be made. In order to justify leaving the family, the new doctrine introduced a very non-Buddhist concept. This concept claimed that when someone’s son or daughter leave their home in order to devote their lives to Buddhist practice, they are doing it so that they can assure beneficial spiritual destiny for their ageing parents.
