Two types of metabolic reactions take place in

the cell: 'building up' (anabolism) and 'breaking

down' (catabolism). Catabolic reactions give

out energy. They are exergonic. In a catabolic

reaction large molecules are broken down into

smaller ones.

Metabolism: All the chemical reactions going in our body is called metabolism. It is of two types :

(a) Anabolism: These are the biochemical reactions of building up of protoplasm. It results in the production of more protoplasm.

(b) Catabolism. It is the process of break down of complex substances into simplel ones.

eg-Glucose.
